MESSAGE FROM JONATHAN DAVIS

Greetings Middle School Families,

Comments are now out online.  You must LogIn to MyDE to access the comments; instructions are provided below. Middle School students have already had a chance to review the comments with their HomeBase advisor.  If there are questions, please encourage your student to have a conversation with the teacher about the comment.

Two school-supported drives going on this month.  Before Thanksgiving break, the students through HomeBase are supporting the locally-based Center for Food Action with the annual CODES (Community Outreach @ D-E School)  Thanksgiving Food Drive (click here to view an informational flyer PDF).  Each HomeBase is bringing in a specific item.  Please think about participating.  We have talked with the students about how our drive will help feed families of four over the upcoming school break and how important it is for kids their age who are struggling with food insecurity.

Starting next week we will be running the School’s annual Winter Clothing Drive in conjunction with the H.O.P.E. (Helping Out People Everywhere) Club from Upper School.  It’s a good opportunity to find those gently used jackets in the back of the closet that no longer fit your Middle Schooler.  The drive runs through the first week of December.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: A reminder, you received a separate message from me yesterday about using the PickATime tool to schedule your timeslot(s) (click here to view this note again). Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to D-E and park. On Thursday, December 6, the first day of Conferences, our Umpleby Lot won’t be open until 2:00 for parking, as we will have buses there for dismissal at 1:30.

Report cards will be staggered this year.  Eighth grade report cards will be coming out this week.  Seventh grade report cards will be issued next Tuesday.  I apologize for the change, but there are several key assignments in 7th grade due this week that we wanted reflected in the interim report card. Sixth grade just receives comments, as the year is ungraded.

Parenting Tech Tip:  Have a plan before you purchase new tech as gifts during the upcoming holiday season (or any time during the year).  We often get caught up in the giving of gifts and don’t always have a plan for how they are going to be used.  Just as you wouldn’t hand the car keys over to a 17 year old without having a conversation about limits and expectations, this is also true of tech gifts.  How many hours in a row can I be on it?  Can I keep it in my room?  Will I be able to put any game or app I want on it?  Be prepared to have the conversation before you need to have the conversation.

Calendar Items:

  • November 15: -Diwali Celebration (evening program – adults only, please – see below for additional information.)
  • November 21: Start of Thanksgiving Break
  • December 6: Shorter day for students, afternoon Parent-Teacher Conferences (see above)
  • December 7: Parent-Teacher Conferences (see above)

See you around campus soon!

Sincerely,

Jonathan Davis, MS Principal

Instructions to Access Comment Reports

By following the directions below you will find your way to both the comments and grades for all classes. These steps detail how to access your child’s comments reports:

  • Go to the MyD-E area of the Dwight-Englewood School website by visiting www.d-e.org and clicking on MyD-E at the top-right of the page.
  • LogIn to MyD-E using your assigned password or the password you established for yourself. If you need help with your password, please call D-E Tech Support at 201-227-3177.
  • Click on your child’s name near the top of the page.
  • Click on Progress (if not already selected), then click on the current grade for your child immediately below that.
  • After selecting the grade, click on the Report Cards link in the Performance area.
  • You will see two links for the Fall Interim: Academic Report Card and Physical Education Report Card. When you click on either of those links, a pdf file that contains your child’s progress information will open in a new window.  This file can be saved to your computer or printed directly from the screen.  These reports will remain viewable while your child is enrolled in the School.
