November 11th Update

Dear Middle School (MS)  Families,

I hope your November is off to a good start.  We’re making shifts around the Middle School, as the fall sports season has ended, and students will be selecting new winter activities options–including basketball and in December MS Musical auditions.

Thanksgiving All-School Food Drive Reminder

The School is once again running a Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Students have in their email a list of items that we’re collecting this year, and some advisories have already created “shopping lists” for their donations.  If you are able to support this program, please do so.  Collection bins are in the Middle School building.

Upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences

Before Thanksgiving Break you’ll be getting a message from me about registering for the upcoming parent / teacher conferences.  This year the conferences will be on December 8 and 9, and will be done through zoom.  Families can register for conference times in advance online, which will allow you to build your conference schedule around your other time commitments.

Mid-Semester Comments & Instructions for Access

Later today you have access to your student’s mid-semester comments for the fall.  These comments summarize the hard work and productivity, and also include coaching comments so that Middle School students can continue to grow and improve.  You access the comments through the D-E website.  Please see the instructions listed below.

This is the first of seven (7) formal Middle School family communications designed to provide information about your student as a learner and a person.  Next week, seventh and eighth grade families will get the mid semester grade report that will give you a snapshot of where your student is heading into Thanksgiving Break.  The separation between comments and grades is intentional.  Our focus is “process over product”, and we want you and the students to know where they stand in the process of learning and growing without the distraction of a product centered grade.  Both the comments and grades are sent at this time to allow students to make improvements before the end of the semester in January.

The Middle School teachers have put great thought into the comments.  The comments are written with the students as the intended audience.  This is the initial report, and we are expecting each student to grow significantly over the course of the year.  Engage your student in a conversation about the comments and get their perspective on them.  Help develop an action plan to reach goals over the course of the year.  This is the process of learning and growth, and we in the Middle School value the parent partnership in helping each student make progress.

Instructions to Access Comments:

  • Go to the My D-E area of the Dwight-Englewood website (https://de.myschoolapp.com)
  • Log-in to My D-E using your assigned password or the password you established for yourself.  If you need assistance, please call D-E Computer Services at 201.227.3177
  • Click on your child’s name at the top of the page
  • Click on Progress (if not already selected), then click on the current grade for your child immediately below that.
  • After selecting the grade, click on the Report Cards link in the Performance area.

You will see a link for Middle School MS Fall Interim: Academic Report Card.  When you click on the link, a pdf that contains your child’s progress information will open in a new window.  This file can be saved to your computer or printed out for your records.  These reports will remain viewable while your child is enrolled at Dwight-Englewood.
