June 7, 2023
Dear Middle School Families,
And just like that, the 2022-’23 school year is drawing to a close. It has been a busy year filled with projects, writing assignments, sporting events, musical rehearsals and so much more. The thread that ties this all together is the growth and development of the middle schoolers themselves. This was clearly evident during the sixth grade Experimental Design Project, which was the capstone project of the school year for those students.
Before we drift into summer break, there are a few key things to review.
- The last day of school is Tuesday, June 13. School ends at 1:30 on that day, with the school buses heading out at 1:40. There will be no late buses or on campus after school activities that afternoon.
- Students will not need to bring much with them on the last day of school. It is our annual field day, so kids should dress comfortably and in active clothing. They should have sunscreen as well, as part of the morning will be outside. It is not a day for slides / sandals, as there will be some running around. Everyone will also get their yearbooks that day. They should bring a good pen or sharpie to school with them for signing yearbooks.
- The 8th Grade Moving-Up Ceremony, on Tuesday, June 13, is the last event of the year for Middle School. It will be under the tent on Leggett Field, beginning at 7:00 pm. 8th Graders should arrive by 6:30 pm to give them time to be in place before the event begins.
- End of year 6th Grade check sheets and 7th and 8th Grade report cards will be going out the week of June 20. You will get an email from the school when they are ready to be viewed online.
- Placements for rising 7th and 8th Graders goes out in regular mail this week. We have set up the schedule for next year so that students can take orchestra or chorus and either a second world language or a discovery class. Please contact your dean before June 22 if you would like to set up that option.
- Please note that your student has a required summer assignment for math class that will be explained before the end of the year. The assignment is due August 31, and will count as the first assessment of the year.
- A note on behalf of the D-E 360° Team that Manhattan Fencing is coming to our campus in the fall. As a preview, MS students are invited to join us for a trial fencing session at Manhattan Fencing on our final day of school – June 13. The trial class, which is being offered at a significant discount exclusively for D-E families, is suitable for experienced students as well as beginners. Participants should wear sneakers and dress in comfortable athletic clothing. Parents/guardians will need to drop participating students off directly at the fencing club location. Click here to register; questions can be emailed to: de360info@d-e.org
If I do not see you before the summer break, I hope you have a nice time away from D-E. It gets pretty quiet in these halls without the students around over the next 10 weeks. While the downtime is nice, I’m already looking forward to the students’ return in September. With that in mind, you will also be hearing from the Middle School Office during the summer break, with Start of School 2023 information — keep an eye out for that in your email.
Regards,
Jonathan
