May 23, 2023
Hello Sixth Grade Parents and Guardians,
We are headed into the final month of school and looking forward to several exciting moments! End-of Year events on the calendar include the following:
- Tonight! May 23rd — Choral Spring Concert (Mr. Lloyd has sent several emails with details. 5:30 call for performers). Everyone is invited!
- May 31st — Experimental Design Fair (see Mr. Larrowe’s e-mail for more details). Everyone is invited to this culmination of 6th grade science class on Wednesday morning.
- June 1st — Evening Private Lesson Recital. Please feel free to come hear musical recitals by students from all three divisions.
- June 5th and June 9th — Metropolitan Museum of Art Trips (Look for an email from Mr. Wallman with details. Half of the class will go on the trip on each of those days.)
- June 13th — Field Day (students only) and Early Dismissal for the Last Day of School. School ends at 1:30 for all three divisions! In addition to Field-Day fun and final advisory activities, students each are given a yearbook, and we take time to sign these for each other.
“Around the dinner table”, you may want to ask your child about…
- the MS talent show,
- assemblies to celebrate spring athletes and academic/community award winners,
- a special 6th grade CFA share (a class meeting during which speakers from each advisory talk about the work their group did to contribute to our community service project at the Englewood Center for Food Action, what they learned, and how they felt about the experience),
- ongoing community-time workshops with Ms. Henry on Navigating Sensitive Discussion Topics and Our Impact on Community: Past, Present and Future, and
- their recent zoom visit with the author of Lions of Little Rock.
A few reminders:
- During the week of June 5th, you will receive a letter from Mr. Davis with a print out of your child’s math and language placements and indication of the electives we have recorded. You will want to hang onto this to help you with your book orders (Joan Millien in the school store will send you a link this summer to the on-line bookseller that has the texts required for each course listed, though you are welcome to comparison shop elsewhere if you like.) Please note that the electives listed are just an indication of what your child selected — not guarantee of enrollment, since schedules are not built until the end of the summer. Departmental chairs and I are here until the 22nd if you would like to reach out with any questions.
- Please help us out by reminding students not to bring food or candy to school unless these are part of a supervised classroom or advisory activity. It can lead to sadness and class disruptions when students bring treats for just a few friends in the morning or hand out sweets in the hall between classes. We would like to avoid unhappy drama or sugar-fueled distraction in these final, very busy weeks. Thank you!
- Everyone has summer reading and math assignments — teachers will announce these in class, and they will be referenced in the summer “mailing”.
- Please help your child to find and turn in any library books or sports uniforms BEFORE the last day of school.
Wishing everyone a wonderful end of the school year! Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Regards,
Tasha Urbanowski
