04.10.23 April Message from Ali Miller (8th)

Hello all,

I hope everyone who celebrated had a good holiday this weekend. It was great to see some of you this morning at the Parent Forum. The slides from this morning are attached to this email.

Also, I still need waivers for many students for the upcoming field trip to the Haworth Water Treatment Plant. The first of these field trips is this Thursday, 4/13. Please have your child return it to me as soon as possible.

I also wanted to give you a heads-up on the upcoming placement tests
Students will be taking tests on the following dates:

Wednesday, April 12

Math 9:00 – 10:00

World Language 10:10 – 11:10

Wednesday, April 19

Science 9:00 – 10:00

History/English (one test for both subjects) 12:30 – 1:30

These tests are a snapshot of where your child’s abilities are at this point. Please be aware that we do not make placement decisions based on one piece of information. The test is a tool that is taken into account including, but not limited to, past assessments; class participation; perseverance in problem-solving; and homework. The assessment covers concepts your children have been learning over a period of time and is not something that can be studied for. If your child has extended time or other accommodations, these will be employed during the tests. Students entering 9th grade next year, new to D-E, will be taking the same exact tests.

Lastly, if your child is enrolled in Independent Reading, they are expected to come to class on Friday morning with a book to read, not to enter class and ask to go to the library.
As always, please reach out with any questions.

Warmly,
Ali
