03.28.24 On Placement Tests from 8th Grade Dean Ali Miller

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope everyone had a wonderful break. It’s great to be back in the building with your children. Believe it or not, the rest of the year is going to fly by!

Placement tests

Beginning April 3, 8th grade students will be taking placement tests as they transition to 9th grade. All students, both current 8th grade students and students beginning at D-E in 9th grade, take the same tests.

These tests are a snapshot of where your child’s abilities are at this point.  Please be aware that we do not make placement decisions based on one piece of information. The test is a tool that is taken into account including, but not limited to, past assessments; class participation; perseverance in problem-solving; and homework. The assessment covers concepts your children have been learning over a period of time and is not something that can be studied for.

Students who normally have extended time and/or computer accommodations will have that for these tests as well.

Students will take the Science and Math tests on 4/3 with ample breaks in between the two tests and World Language and Humanities (one test for both English and History) on 4/17 (also with ample breaks between the two tests).

These tests can provoke anxiety and nervousness for the students. The best way for you to support your child is to make sure they get a good night’s sleep the night before as well as eating breakfast the day of (These are important every day!).  In addition, messaging from you on trying your best and overall support is helpful.

I will be informing the students about this process as well.

Please email me with any questions.

With thanks,

Ali
