01.29.24 From Ali Miller (8): January Update

It’s been great to have a full week of school this week (though that snow day was pretty sweet).
Here’s some information for you:
Thank you to many of you for the interest in the Teens for Peace program. At this time, the program is full. I will be looking for leadership opportunities in the future for those students who were interested and unable to participate.

Some of you are asking about the Moving Up Ceremony. This takes place on the last day of school, June 7 at 7pm. Please mark your calendars.

This week we had Ms. Henry lead an Assembly on Martin Luther King, Jr., the importance of service, and how small choices every day (to be kind, to be inclusive) are also a part of his legacy. In addition to our December volunteering at the Community Food Bank of NJ, we will also have a half day of service in the spring to 4-5 different organizations. Students will get to choose where they want to do their service. Last year we went to the Community Food Bank of NJ, MedShare, Palisades Interstate Park and did work for Meals on Wheels NJ.
As an 8th grade team, we had a lesson for students on the unsung heroes of the Civil Rights Movements, the numerous people who made contributions to the advancement of equal rights and social justice who are not well known. We also showed portions of the film Rustin. This movie is available to view on Netflix and was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company. Bayard Rustin is one of those unsung heroes; he was the man who primarily organized the March on Washington.
Students who wish to participate in the National History Day regional contest must tell their history teacher by next week that they want to register and their history teacher will register them. Everyone is eligible to participate. The date of the event is Saturday, March 2 at Monmouth University. We will leave campus at 7am and return by 5pm. (D-E will provide transportation.) This is an all day event.  If a student qualifies, then they will advance to the NJ State competition. Please reach out to your child’s History teacher with questions.
Spring sports will start the week of February 26. Auditions for the MS musical this year, The Wizard of Oz (Junior Edition) will begin soon. Any questions about the musical, please email Eileen Lynch at lynche@d-e.org
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. It may seem crazy to include the date for the Moving Up Ceremony, but believe it or not, June will be here before we know it!
Warmly,
Ali
